H.01 Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal – small, successful issue

Engraved: ERNEST SMETHURST FEB:15 1902

Citation: On the 15th February 1902, two boys were sliding on ice on a mill reservoir at Shaw, near Oldham (Lancashire), when the ice gave way six yards from the bank, and both fell in. Smethurst, who cannot swim, went out to their help, but also fell in. He in some way managed to support them until further help came, and all were got out in safety.

Suspender is a bit loose and slightly misshapen. Some minor contact marks, and one edge 'dig', otherwise GVF.
